My Room

in this room
where I watch the ceiling fan
spin round and round,
outside this window
other people laugh
with other people’s friends –
other people’s dogs
bark in other people’s backyards
behind other people’s houses
where other people sit
at other people’s tables
and eat their dinner –
other people’s girlfriends
rest their heads
against someone else’s chest
in someone else’s life
someone else’s happiness –
in this room
I am not other people
though I believe
I used to be –
now I am merely me,
other people’s someone else
in someone else’s room
beyond someone else’s window
where no one laughs
no one loves
and the fan spins round and round
